Elijah Hemingway Charged in Edgewood Stabbing That Killed Idris Evans

Elijah Hemingway, 32, of Pittsburgh, has been charged in connection with a deadly stabbing in Edgewood that left 46-year-old Idris Evans dead and a woman critically injured. According to Allegheny County Police, the incident occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, September 24, in the 100 block of Linden Avenue.

First responders arrived after County 9-1-1 received a report of a stabbing and found Evans and an adult woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. Evans was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The woman was also hospitalized and remains in critical condition.

The Allegheny County Police Department’s Homicide Unit was called to investigate. During the investigation, detectives learned that a K9 unit from the Monroeville Police Department had located a man behind a nearby home. The man, later identified as Hemingway, had lacerations to his hand and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being detained.

Police said witness interviews led detectives to determine that Hemingway entered the home and attacked the victims while they were sleeping. He is facing charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass.

The killing has brought grief to the Pittsburgh-area community, particularly those who knew Evans. UPMC confirmed that Evans was a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. The health system described him as a dedicated caregiver and valued member of its medical and university communities.

As the investigation and criminal proceedings continue, Evans’ family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones are left mourning his sudden death, while the surviving victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Police and prosecutors are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
