Jonathan McKinsey, 40, of Dublin, California, has died after being fatally shot at the Dublin Sports Grounds on Saturday, September 26, 2026. His death is being investigated as a homicide, while authorities continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting.
According to Dublin Police Services, a sergeant was driving near the Dublin Sports Grounds at approximately 3:08 p.m. when he saw a man lying in the parking lot. At about the same time, multiple 911 calls were reporting a shooting in the area. Responding officers found McKinsey with multiple gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said witnesses and community members assisted investigators in locating two suspects who remained nearby. The suspects were identified as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 and residents of Dublin. Authorities said the married couple are McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Both were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
As of September 28, police have not publicly disclosed a motive. Dublin Police Services said there are no outstanding suspects and no known threat to public safety, while detectives continue examining evidence and working to establish what led to the fatal shooting.
McKinsey was also known professionally as an engineering leader who worked remotely for The New York Times, where the Pleasanton Weekly reported he served as head of engineering for the publication’s games player experience.
The shooting has left members of the Dublin community shaken. Residents interviewed by local media described the neighborhood as close-knit and expressed shock following the killing. A witness who encountered the aftermath told the San Francisco Chronicle that he had heard several gunshots before seeing McKinsey fall in the parking lot.
